With a potential market value of over 2 trillion USD and the opportunity to create approximately 10 million jobs by 2050, Indian circular economies are increasingly spoken of in a positive light. Circular economies function based on the principles of sustainability and that nothing is truly ‘waste’: harnessing clean energy to up-cycle discarded materials into new products, creating value while minimizing waste production.
India’s jute industry is a potential example. India is one of the world’s leading raw jute and jute product manufacturers, contributing to 55.7% of global output. However, research increasingly suggests the potential for establishing a circular economy of jute, with R&D investments, enhanced supply chain models, and value-added products being recommended to combat its higher production costs.
Moreover, jute’s increased biodegradability and capacity to absorb carbon make it a key contender for sustainable products, making it a suitable contender around which a circular economy can be built. Additionally, research points to focusing on artisans and handicraftspeople being crucial towards moving away from the more automated practices of traditional jute manufacturing; this way, their livelihoods can be elevated, resulting in not just positive environmental achievements, but also socio-economic ones.
The Bengal Jute Alliance is an initiative that aims to advance the aforementioned future. Our specific focus is to facilitate the adoption of sustainable practices within West Bengal’s jute manufacturing sector to develop circular economies, while also protecting artisans’ livelihoods. Through our efforts, we aim to showcase that sustainability isn’t just reserved for the future; it can be realized through targeted interventions in the present.
